Working through photography, Yanyan Zhao adopts a highly feminine approach to explore desire and intimate spaces, and how these inner worlds interact with external society. Her practice is often biographical and self-explorative, reflecting on and analysing her psychological landscape—past experiences, hidden thoughts, and fantasies—while engaging deeply with questions of social identity, particularly that of “women,” and more specifically “East-Asian women,” within a transnational cultural context.
